Graduate Studies and Research

Kris Govertsen is a graduate student at Northeastern University external link studying for a Master of Science in Sustainable Building Systems and an Interdisciplanary Engineering Ph.D.. Her research focuses on identifying thermal characteristics of homes using smart thermostat data. Her goal is to scale this method to identify communities who are most vulnerable to extreme temperature related weather events. To date she has written an opinion piece and an ASHRAE conference paper. Next she is working on a journal submission.

Undergraduate

Prior to joining Northeastern, Kris was an early college program student in The Clarkson School at Clarkson University. Kris stayed at Clarkson and joined their Honors Program where she studied Civil Engineering with concentrations in Architectural Engineering, Structural Engineering and Construction Engineering Management. For her undergraduate thesis, she proposed a small business called SMART Start House, LLC, aimed at helping the average american family make their home more Sustainable, Manageable, Affordable, Resilient and Technological.

Extra-curricular Activities

Kris is the Community Co-Chair for Northeastern University's Graduate Women in Science in Engineering (GWiSE) organization. She is a member of the Civil and Enviornmental Engineering Department's Graduate Student Council. She is a volunteer member of the United States Green Building Council's (USGBC's) New York Upstate Market Leadership Advisory Board (MLAB).

Hobbies

Outside of academia, Kris enjoys skiing, National Parks external link, taking polaroid pictures of her family and cats, biking Boston, and making all of her own clothes by knitting, crocheting and sewing!

Professional Credentials

Kris is an Engineering in Training in New York State. She is a LEED Green Associate and a LEED Green Classroom Professional. She is currently studying for the WELL AP.
