A research team from the University of Michigan, Leibniz Universitat Hannover, and Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) investigated the long-term and transient effects of environmental operating conditions (EOC) on the structural response and performance of wind turbine towers. An array of six Martlets with tri-axial accelerometers was installed on the Whisper 500 wind turbine by Southwest Windpower Inc atop a 12.3m tall steel structure in Los Alamos, New Mexico, USA. The structure was specially designed as a test bed for wind turbine research and features a pivot point in the middle of the structure that allows for artificial damage to be introduced by replacing the base locking bolt with a spring. The week-long experiment demonstrated the reliability of the Martlet for DAQ applications and provided a valuable dataset for extracting the effect of EOCs on the vibration response of structures in the field.
